So I am in the country of Bulgaria for now. . I'll fill you on details in the next 24 hours, but it's time to at least post some pictures of this city's history for now. The food here is great, and the hostel guys have been real hospitable as well. I even got a "welcome" beer a little while after I came in too.
new update as of June 15 at 9 pm, and the sun has even set yet!
So yesterday when I arrived I had to search and search at the airport from the bus to city center. Once I got to the city center, (or what I thought was city center), I found a tourist information place that gave me directions to the hostel. I was greeted by the staff: Bulgarian couple that run the place, a Ukranian, who has lived here for 15 years and is a toured guide, and a German who has been here a good while also.
I kind of played lazy but I walked around on my own and experienced the "Old Town" area as they call it where the hostel is. Then I took a 6pm "free walking tour" that is run by a non-profit organization here in town. The tour pointed out all of the big sights in town, and the guide did an amazing job informing us of all the history here in Sofia. There are artifacts all over the city that are over a thousand years old. There's even remnants that I would remind you of something from Rome or Athens, and you find them in a subway station. There's a ton of history that the world probably knows little of in relation to this country.
When the tour was over I joined a couple from Chicago (who I met on the tour) for dinner. They are interested in working in Korea as teachers so they were quizzing me quite a bit on my experiences there. The meal was amazing especially considering that it cost 68 Lev (right at 50 USD). That included a nice bottle of wine, a fancy salad, three entrees, and homemade ice cream. Oh yeah, there was a bottle of water and an order or two of bread as well. That's what I call an awesome meal. It was a great recommendation by Boyko -- our tour guide.
