February 7, 2020 - Foodie Friday - Thai Bistro

It's time for the newest addition to the this blog: Foodie Friday.

Back in the Fall, before picking my father up for our weekly lunch, I did one of my usual Yelp searches for good places to eat. He works at Memphis Animal Services most Thursdays, and I am off on that day. So, I will drive out to Appling Road and pick him up for a weekly lunch. When we started doing this, I consulted Yelp several times for recommendations in the Bartlett area.

One day I did the easiest search possible. It's pretty much the equivalent of asking Siri to give you the top five restaurants in Bartlett. Thai Bistro popped up as one of those choices and the old man is usually open to eating whatever I select for that day. Let me tell you something. This is really, really good Thai food. Authentic? Definitely.

The first time we ate at Thai Bistro only two other booths had patrons occupying them. This past Thursday when we walked in, every booth but one was occupied. That's how it should always be in this place.

Tasty, Complimentary Soup
First of all, we have had some excellent customer service both times we were here to eat. The young man that served us has done a tremendous job. The only thing we would complain about would be that we were given soups before our waters came to the table. On the flip side,we were offered some very tasty soup that came with a great kick to the taste buds. On a somewhat cold, gloomy day, that definitely helps keep you warm. There was a very kind lady walking around who might be the owner giving out the complimentary soups and she did her due diligence to make sure every person in the building had all they needed and more.

Now for the food. As I mentioned earlier, this is very authentic Thai food. You can read all these reviews talking about how great the food is, but you just taste it yourself. Thai food is not something that I would consider to be a spicy type of food. Yes, you can make it spicy all you want. But the base of some curries can be mild, and some are a little on the sweet side too. Thai Bistro will cater to your needs in terms of the level of spice.

The first time I ate here I tried out the Pad Thai. I am not a huge Pad Thai fan, but this place changed my mind. Pad Thai is made of thin rice noodles in a sauce with egg, bean sprouts, ground peanuts, green onions, and a meat of your choosing. I actually ventured out a little bit and chose Shrimp. I prefer seafood most of the time with my Thai meals, and this Pad Thai was incredibly full  of tasty shrimp. The sauce here is homemade it is done very well.

Shrimp Rolls
This time around we tried a different appetizer and the presentation was awesome. Even Google Photos thought so. The Shrimp Rolls were very nice and crispy. They are kind of a different take on egg rolls, with a little sweet and sour sauce you can use to dip them in. I would love to see how they make these guys. They were wonderful.

The Massaman Curry
My main dish this time was something I had maybe tried once in a restaurant setting before. Massaman Curry is kind of a sweet, savory curry that "can be enjoyed by anyone" as the menu states. This dish comes with peanuts, potatoes, and onions. I threw in some fried tofu, because these Asians really know how to do Tofu. Eating it once in a blue moon is just enough for me these days. This Massaman definitely exceeded my expectations. The only thing I had to compare it to was a version or two that I made sometime last year. I would recommend this dish to anyone who has never even tried curry, or even Thai food before. This could change your mind for sure.

This restaurant has what every restaurant should thrive to have. They have a wonderful wait staff that is caring, warm and does their job promptly. They have an owner/manager who sees to the well-being of their patrons.  They have a very inviting atmosphere that makes you want to come back even if the food is just okay from time to time. As I mentioned plenty, the food is incredible, so you will definitely come back. Also, they are a locally owned business. So do yourself a huge flavor, I mean favor and give Thai Bistro a shot. You will love it, and your taste buds will thank you.

I forgot to mention that they have a Sushi Bar as well.
